Stocks recover some lost ground on Dell earnings

Global stocks recoup some ground lost over past week as Dell earnings improve sentiment

LONDON (AP) — Strong earnings from computer maker Dell supported stock markets Wednesday but concerns about the pace of the U.S. economic recovery limited the gains, particularly on Wall Street.

Sentiment across markets has been fragile of late, with investors worried about a slowdown in the global economic recovery. Weak U.S. industrial production and housing figures this week did little to lift the gloom.

However, forecast-busting earnings from Dell in an after-hours statement Tuesday encouraged some investors to buy back into stocks.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 1.2 percent at 5,929 while Germany’s DAX rose 0.8 percent to 7,312. The CAC-40 in France was 1.1 percent higher at 3,987.
